In healthcare settings, the surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), antimicrobial resistance, and outbreaks plays a critical role in preventing and controlling infectious diseases, optimizing antimicrobial use, and improving patient outcomes. This course offers participants a comprehensive understanding of surveillance principles and methods, with a focus on both theoretical foundations and practical applications in laboratory and clinical settings.

Intended audience:

Medical doctors and pharmacists, nurses or other healthcare professionals with an MSc or PhD are eligible, provided they completed the basic module or have experience in IPC

Objectives: 

  • To appreciate the goals and principles of surveillance and feedback in preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), antimicrobial resistance and outbreaks in hospital settings and optimizing antimicrobial use.
  • To be introduced to basic methods of data analysis, use of data management resources and fundamental principles of reporting and communicating surveillance data.
  • To appreciate the aims, objectives and methodology of Point Prevalence Surveys (PPS)
  • To identify effective ways of comparing surveillance data across institutions/settings and disseminating results to healthcare professionals and policy makers at local, national and European levels.
  • To enable planning, implementation and conduct of a standardized PPS in own hospital setting.
