To appreciate the goals and principles of surveillance and feedback in preventing and controlling healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), antimicrobial use, antimicrobial resistance and outbreaks in hospital settings. To be introduced to basic methods of data analysis, use of data management resources and fundamental principles of reporting and communicating surveillance data. To appreciate the aims, objectives and methodology of Point Prevalence Surveys (PPS). To identify effective ways of comparing surveillance data across institutions/settings and disseminating results to healthcare professionals and policy makers at local, national and European levels. To enable planning, implementation and conduct of a standardised PPS in its own hospital setting.
