The management of infections & sepsis in the immune-compromised host is challenging in many ways: delayed diagnosis, atypical presentation, metabolic changes, adjuvant therapies, severe prognosis, and end-of-life decisions. Sepsis is a common and mortal syndrome, and the incidence is increasing. On the other hand, mortality increases with pre-existing immunosuppression. Moreover, in the last decade, the immunosuppressed patient population and expected life is rising which exacerbated the issue. In low to middle-income countries, the infrastructure of hospitals makes the problem more complex. There is scarce information in the literature about the presentation and outcomes of sepsis in immunocompromised oncology patients with personalised management. Newer risk groups, associated with therapies (CAR-T) or older adults (immune-senescence) require specific attention. The new concept of pneumonia in the immunocompromised host provided an innovative management approach. An update of hot innovative topics with an approach led by international multidisciplinary experts will be provided.
Intended audience:
Clinical microbiologists and infectious diseases as well as other medical specialists, junior and senior, who want to know more or re-fresh their knowledge of leprosy; professionals collaborating with or working in endemic countries and who need to be updated on current issues in leprosy, especially new approaches to prevention and discussions about ‘Zero Leprosy’. Although this program focuses on medical aspects of leprosy, it may also be of interest to program administrators or managers, who are already familiar with leprosy findings and issues.
Objectives:
The objectives are (i) to know more and celebrate the discovery of the leprosy bacillus 150 years ago by Dr. Armauer Hansen in Bergen, leading to a better understanding of the transmission of this old disease and how we may interrupt it with new tools, (ii) to update the knowledge of professionals about leprosy, a disease now considered as a neglected tropical disease, but which is still seen throughout the world, (iii) to gather experts in leprosy to translate knowledge and experience into ideas for future research and action.
