In memoriam Dik Mevius

We are sad to announce that Professor Dik Mevius, one of the founders of VetCAST and ESGVM, passed away on November 21st at the age of 68. Dik was an international expert on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animals. He devoted many years of his life to fighting AMR in the animal sector in the Netherlands, Europe and beyond. Dik was closely involved in setting up a European monitoring system on AMR which was eventually included in European legislation. Dik explicitly sought collaboration with the human health sector to address AMR from a One Health perspective. Next to an excellent scientist, Dik was a straight-forward and loyal person who enjoyed sharing his knowledge and opinion. With Diks’ death, we have lost a great colleague and a forerunner in the field of AMR and One Health.

ICOHAR is back in 2023!

ICOHAR 2023 will take place in Copenhagen just after ECCMID (18/04 to 20/04). The programme includes 7 sessions dedicated to AMR surveillance, transmission, antimicrobial stewardship, host adaptation of multidrug-resistant bacteria, diagnostics, phage therapy and microbiota modulation, and two roundtable discussions. You can see the most updated programme here.

ESGVM websymposia: Holomics and Machine Learning in Animal Health Research

Our second webinar/web-symposium entitled “Holomics and Machine Learning in Animal Health Research” will take place on the 24th of November 2022 at 10 am CET. This ESGVM/AVANT one-hour joint webinar will explore the role of machine learning in veterinary research projects that aim to integrate “omics” data and other types of data to investigate animal health. To discuss this subject we invited Dr Dirkjan Schokker from Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (Netherlands), and Dr Jazmin Ramos Madrigal from the Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics, The Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen (Denmark) to share their experience on holomics and machine learning in animal health research.

COST Action 18217 - ENOVAT

July 15, 2020

In 2018 ESGVM, VetCAST and other scientists in the field applied for funding at the European Cooperation in Science & Technology (COST action). In 2019 the application was evaluated and selected for funding. The project CA18217 – European network for Optimization of Veterinary Antimicrobial Treatment (ENOVAT) started November 15th 2019 and will run until November 14th 2023. The aim of this Action is to optimize veterinary antimicrobial use with special emphasis on the development of antimicrobial treatment guidelines and refinement of microbiological diagnostic procedures. For more information visit the ENOVAT-website.

The Veterinary Practice Guidelines Project

July 11, 2020

The Veterinary Practice Guidelines project was launched by the ESGVM 2 years ago with the aim of promoting rational use of antimicrobials in animals while providing optimal veterinary care. The ESGVM operating procedure (OP) for writing veterinary practice guidelines is based on the ESCMID OP for clinical guidelines, and was approved by the ESCMID guidelines director in January 2019. The ESGVM has currently one guidelines project on antimicrobial use in Bovine Respiratory Disease ongoing, and a guidelines project on antimicrobial use in companion animal gastrointestinal disease in the pipeline.

International Conference on One Health Antimicrobial Resistance (ICOHAR

Co-organised by ESGVM, ESGHAMI, the University of Copenhagen, the European Association of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology (EAVPT), the network Edinburgh Infectious Diseases (EID), the Netherlands Center for One Health, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA)

16 – 18 April 2019, Copenhagen, Denmark

It is generally recognized that control and prevention of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires a holistic One Health approach involving specialists from different sectors. In line with this concept, the 2nd ICOHAR aims at bringing together representatives from all relevant sectors (e.g. public health, human and veterinary medicine, livestock production, food safety and environmental sciences) to share research and education strategies for understanding and reducing the risks of AMR at the interphase between humans, animals and the environment. The programme does not only focus on zoonotic transfer of AMR but also on the numerous AMR-related challenges shared by clinicians, clinical microbiologists, infectious disease specialists and researchers working in these sectors.

Antimicrobial Stewardship: Implementing the Change

Co-organised by ESGAP, ESGVM and the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA),

4 April 2018, Birmingham, United Kingdom

The objectives are to promote hospital infection control and antimicrobial stewardship in small animal practice and to educate a new generation of veterinary infectious disease specialists to be able to develop and implement infection control programmes (ICPs) and antimicrobial stewardship programmes (ASPs). Postgraduate education in this area is regarded as one of the key missions of ESGVM in order to meet the current public and animal health concerns related to the occurrence of multidrug-resistant bacteria and the increasing demand for responsible antibiotic use in veterinary medicine.
