Course Objectives
  • Review the current knowledge on the epidemiology and clinical presentation of infections due to intracellular bacteria with special focus on Coxiella, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, Rickettsia, Chlamydia and Tropheryma whipplei.
  • Know the limitations and advantages of each diagnostic approach that may be used to document these bacterial infections.
  • Know how to manage and treat patients infected with one of these strict intracellular bacteria.
  • Understand the pathogenesis of infections due to these intracellular bacteria.
  • Appreciate the importance of genomics in understanding the biology and virulence of these intracellular bacteria.
  • Discuss cases in interactive meet-the-expert sessions.
  • Have practicals introducing key important tools used to establish the diagnosis of infections due to intracellular bacteria as well as to discover new bacterial species.
