Congratulations to the recipients of the 2015 TAE Awards for Training Achievements!

Nelia Neves Silva, São João Hospital Centre, Porto, Portugal

Nelia is a 4th year trainee in Infectious Diseases (ID) from São João Hospital Centre, in Porto, Portugal. Tropical Medicine is one of the ID fields in which she has worked and has special interest. She completed the ‘Postgraduate Certificate Course in Tropical Medicine and International Health’ at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium (between Sep 14-Mar 15).
She has participated in several volunteer projects in Africa, working in hospitals in urban and rural settings in Angola (Aug-Sep 2005, 2006 and 2007), and completed a training programme at the Paediatric Hospital in Luanda during an outbreak of rabies (Apr 2009).
Nelia was the Infectious Diseases Trainees' Representative in São João Hospital Centre (between 2012-2014), and was actively involved in the organization of several workshops and postgraduate courses for residents, including ‘Postgraduate Course in Antimicrobials’ (2013-2014), ‘Postgraduate Course in Travel Medicine’ (2013-2014) and ‘Course in Infection Control’ (2014).

Nicole Pagani, School of Infectious Diseases, Turin, Italy

Nicole joined the post-graduate school of Infectious Diseases in Turin in 2010. She gained experience treating patients with HIV infection, tuberculosis and healthcare-associated infections, including critically ill patients and solid organ and bone marrow transplant recipients.
In 2013 after achieving the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in Liverpool, she spent six months in Kampala, Uganda, working at the Mulago Hospital and at the Infectious Diseases Institute HIV clinic focusing on the management of HIV infection during pregnancy. She contributed to the development of a new collaboration between Turin University and Makerere University, aiming to build up a pharmacogenetics laboratory in Kampala.
Currently she works at the City of Health and Science University Hospital in Turin and is responsible for an epidemiological study on bloodstream infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in solid organ transplant recipients. The initial part of the study has been accepted as a poster at ECCMID 2015.
