Awardees in 2014

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2014 TAE Awards for Training Achievements!

Liliana Praticò graduated in medicine from the University of Pavia in 2008. In 2009 she started her residency at the Infectious Diseases Department of San Matteo Hospital in Pavia. During her training she developed extensive competence in the field of tuberculosis, infections in pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases, both from a clinical and from a public health perspective. In 2011 and 2012 she worked for five months at St. Mary’s hospital Lacor in Gulu, Northern Uganda, dealing particularly with TB/HIV and HIV in pregnancy. In 2013 she coordinated with Professor Donato Greco (Italian Institute of Health) on a prevalence study of hospital acquired infections (HAI) in Uganda, with the aim of improving the quality of nursing assistance to reduce the impact of HAI in a rural hospital of Sub-Saharan Africa. Currently she is working in Pavia and is due to finish her training in June 2014.

Neven Papić, following graduation from Medical School, worked as a research fellow at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Zagreb, where he became interested in the field of viral hepatitis and started his ID residency in 2010. In 2011 and 2012 he explored the field of genome analysis at the University of Utah, USA. These studies provided insight into the broad portrait of genomic changes associated with inflammatory response to HCV infection. Since his return to Croatia, he has been committed to the education of peers in translational medicine and has been collaborating with non-governmental organisations to promote awareness of viral hepatitis and HIV. In his research he advocates the interdisciplinary approach that integrates the basic and clinical science to decode dynamic interactions between microbial pathogens and their hosts. Currently he is completing his final year of ID training and his PhD thesis.

Erlangga Yusuf graduated from medical school in Amsterdam and obtained his Ph.D. in Leiden, Netherlands. During his medical study he went to Stellenbosch, South Africa, to learn more about the treatment of tuberculosis and HIV, and to London to do research on chemokine receptors. Afterwards, he did a postdoc fellowship in surgical related infection in Lausanne (mentored by Dr Borens and Dr Trampuz) that resulted in several papers and two book chapters on surgical site infection and prosthetic joint infection. At the same time, he did his second masters in hospital infection control in Leuven. Dr Yusuf often uses multimedia to share knowledge with his peers (YouTube movie about sonication, keeping CM/ID blog -medimic.blogspot.com). He has given several talks on surgical related infection and infection control at local and international level (ECCMID). Dr Yusuf is currently working as a resident in laboratory medicine at UZ Brussel in Belgium, mentored by Prof. D. Piérard.
