Biofilm-driven infections: research and clinical relevance

Module objectives

When adopting a sessile lifestyle, bacteria gain the adaptive ability to tolerate a wide range of antimicrobials, becoming increasingly resilient. In such cases, antimicrobial treatment of biofilm-driven infections may fail not necessarily due to resistance but rather through tolerance and target evasion. This course will provide up to date information on: the clinical relevance of microbial consortia; the role of quorum sensing in inter-microbial cooperation; in vitro biofilm assessment; infection prevention and control strategies for biofilmdriven infections; clinical management of biofilm-associated infections

Infection Control, Antimicrobial and Diagnostic Stewardship in the Emergency Room: Simulation to enhance practice

Module objectives

The main objective of this module of the EUCIC Infection Prevention and Control Certificate, Infection Control, Antimicrobial and Diagnostic Stewardship in the Emergency Room: Simulation to enhance practice, is to give a contribution to patient quality and safety through the adoption of good practices, integrating simulation as a main component. Typically, ERs are the first place for decisions and procedures, including the screening and isolation of patients, good practices on invasive procedures, appropriate diagnosis of infections and antimicrobial prescription. This module is mainly dedicated to healthcare physicians, nurses and pharmacists working in the ER setting, as well to the teams in charge of infection, prevention and control and antimicrobial stewardship.

March 2025 - Madrid, Spain

This course will be held in English

Infection control, antimicrobial and diagnostic stewardship in the emergency room: the challenge of high-risk infectious pathogens

Module objectives

Emergency rooms (ERs) are challenging: time is scarce; the workload is great; medical teams are not constant; awareness and expertise can be improved. Typically, ERs are the first place for antimicrobial decisions, which should be timely and appropriate, with low rates of prescription change when patients are transferred to wards. On the other side, ERs are central for screening and isolation of admitted patients, improving safety of other patients and health workers.

5 - 6 June 2025 - Matosinhos, Portugal

This course will be held in Portuguese

Training Professionals in Patient Safety

Module objectives

With the increasing complexity and invasiveness of health care procedures, executed in non-classical scenarios, along with a population with more demanding needs, patient safety is an unavoidable and indispensable aspect in the current reality. In this regard, health professionals, who are key players in health care delivery, must be prepared to risk prevention and control, through their identification, communication and management. This course aims to provide tools to health professionals in this area.

October 2025 - Groningen, Netherlands

This course will be held in English

Hands on Network and Data Analysis for Infection Control

Module objectives

Patients are continuously transferred between and within healthcare institutions; with them, they carry MDRO, and transmission to other patients can occur every time they are admitted again to another hospital. This means, that single hospitals and Long Term Care Facilities are part of a more organic regional healthcare network that has to organize the prevention of infections and especially the prevention of resistance. Via network modeling, MDRO transmission can be mapped to identify the intervention points within the hospital and healthcare region to prevent further spread by taking correct infection prevention measurements and direct communication/transparency regarding MDRO colonized patients within the network. This workshop focuses on identifying your real-life healthcare network by visualizing and analyzing patient movements. Try to predict risks of outbreaks via modeling of patient movements. Theory and practicals include the analysis of a regional healthcare network using modeling software, expert topics on empiric coverage, infection- and resistance prevention, and using modern technology for regional outbreak control.

5 - 7 March 2026 - Catania, Italy

This course will be held in English

Management of “pandemic” MDROs: is it still simple and feasible?

Module objectives

We asked ourselves if it was not the case to promote initiatives to give knowledge, to promote behaviour change, to organize the surveillance, prevention and control interventions of HAI. The course that we propose, to be really meaningful for the operators who will take part in it, will not be purely theoretical but interactive. The course would like to spread the culture and the knowledge about Healthcare Associated Infections prevention and control and of MDROs detection and therapies by education and motivation to obtain a behavior change with a comprehensive vision of prevention, surveillance, control of infections and therapies. The participants will learn about the international and Italian epidemiology of MDROs and about the laws and guide-lines to control MDROs spread comparing different international experiences. The participants will be able to implement infection control procedures from hand hygiene to surveillance of MDROs and HAI and to apply stewardship programs.
