ESGMYC publication on access to rifapentine in Europe

The fight against tuberculosis requires optimal treatment: access to rifapentine in Europe

ESGMYC has published an important letter on the decreased access to rifapentine a drug that has been shown to have the potential to significantly shorten and simplify current treatment regimens for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), down to one month, and TB, down to four months. Signatories of three major European scientific societies involved in TB care (the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the European Respiratory Society and the European Society of Mycobacteriology) and of TBnet have authored a letter denouncing the lack of access to rifapentine and urging the manufacturer to register this drug in Europe. This letter was recently published in the prestigious European Respiratory Journal (Guglielmetti L. et al. ERJ 2022).

New ESGMYC Publications

ESGMYC has published two new papers recently covering treatment for rifampicin-resistant TB and chronic HCV infection as well as approaches to latent tuberculosis screening targeting migrants in EU/EEA countries. Be sure to check the ESGMYC publications page to get the links to read the papers.

Overall course aim: to increase insight and practical knowledge with respect to diagnosis and treatment of (latent) tuberculosis and infections with non-tuberculous mycobacteria; more specifically, to provide:
- latest insights related to the underlying ‘biology’ of mycobacterial infections, both from the host and the infecting mycobacterium;
- practical guidance for clinical, microbiological and radiological diagnosis of mycobacterial disease, in line with current guidelines;
- guidance for application of antibiotic treatment of tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacterial disease, based on the most recent guidelines;
- guidance for use of therapeutic drug monitoring to optimize treatment regimens for mycobacterial infections;

Co-organised by ESGMYC, ESCMID and the Society of Infectious Disease (Singapore)

26 – 28 September 2019, Singapore

The ESCMID Postgraduate Educational Course on TB and Mycobacterial Infections was successfully held 26 - 28th September 2019 in Singapore, jointly organised with the Society of Infectious Disease (Singapore).  The Organising Faculty were Jon Friedland, Delia Goletti, Catherine Ong, David Lye and Paul Tambyah, with the first 3 from ESGMYC. Emmanuelle Cambau from ESCMID Council and ESGMYC together with Guy Thwaites, Reinout van Crevel and Tauhidul Islam from World Health Organisation comprised the other overseas faculty.  Topics ranged from Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, Diagnostics, Care delivery, Basic research, Case-based discussions, to non-tuberculous mycobacteria including leprosy.  There were excellent talks given by the 21 local and the overseas faculty in addition to poster presentations.  The judges decided on awarding 3 prizes: Best Award for Lab Scientist, Best Award for Clinical Research and Best Award for TB Control/Public Health.  Participants and speakers came from the Singapore Ministry of Health, World Health Organisation, TB Control Unit in Singapore, the Singapore Central TB laboratory, NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, paediatric and adult infectious disease physicians from all the major Singapore hospitals and the region. Tuberculosis and Mycobacterial Infections: An Educational Update

Co-organised by ESGMYC, ESCMID and the Society of Infectious Disease (Singapore)

26 – 28 September 2019, Singapore

The aim of the course is to provide an educational update on the topic of tuberculosis and to a lesser extent other mycobacterial infections in South-East Asia. Tuberculosis remains the infectious disease with the single greatest mortality worldwide and the majority of cases are in Asia. The specific education aims are: to provide an update on the latest thinking in the management, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis; to introduce aspects of the immune response to tuberculosis as relevant to the potential development of new diagnostics and host directed therapies; to outline recent developments in the management of non- tuberculous mycobacteria commonly found in South-East Asia.

Global tuberculosis report 2018

WHO has published a global TB report every year since 1997. The main aim of the report is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the TB epidemic, and of progress in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease at global, regional and country levels. This is done in the context of recommended global TB strategies and targets endorsed by WHO’s Member States and broader development goals set by the United Nations (UN). The 2018 edition of the global TB report was released on 18 September, in the lead up to the first-ever UN High Level Meeting on TB on 26 September 2018.
