It is with deep sadness that we have to announce that our dear colleague Gerold Stanek recently passed away. Gerold played a central role for ESGBOR from the start; for many years, he served as chairperson of our study group and supported our activities in many ways. Gerold was involved in the organization of many congresses and informal meetings, which helped our scientific community to grow together. Despite this and his great merits for the research on Lyme borreliosis we will remember him as a humble person with unique sense of humor and endless optimism.

The ESGBOR Executive Committee would like to express our deepest condolences to Gerold’s family and friends.

Volker Fingerle (Chair), Mateusz Markowicz (Treasurer), Anna J Henningsson (Secretary)

The EU parliament has adopted a resolution on Lyme borreliosis

ESGBOR welcomes the call of the EU parliament for additional epidemiological surveillance, funding and research for this tick-borne infection, and improvement of patient diagnosis and diagnostic testing.

Unfortunately, the resolution is based on exaggerated rumours such as “silent epidemic” spread by ticks, that remains underdiagnosed and affects around one million Europeans.

ESGBOR would welcome support from the EU parliament addressing the issue of false rumours about Lyme borreliosis. It is also time to combat the provision of non-validated diagnostics testing, deceptive Lyme borreliosis diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Causing unnecessary concern about a disease may also cause harm and is an important public health problem.
