ESCMID Study Group for Lyme Borreliosis - ESGBOR

News & Activities

Tests to quickly detect and identify Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in ticks found attached on people have been promoted by various companies.

Results may be unreliable. A negative test does not exclude a risk of Lyme borreliosis. A positive test does not reliably predict development of Lyme borreliosis and may lead to unnecessary antibiotic treatment.

In a position paper, ESGBOR explains the reasons of discouragement, the recommended measures and lists some relevant publications (also available in a German and French version).

New ESCMID Study Group

ESGBOR is a newly formed ESCMID Study Group, which starts its activities in the field of Lyme Borreliosis. The constitutional meeting was held during the 12th International Conference on Lyme Borreliosis and other Tick-Borne Diseases, 28 September 2010 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
