25 February 2013

Dear Colleague,
The ESCMID PK/PD Study Group looks back to a very busy year with a variety of activities ranging from educational events to scientific projects. For finalising EPASG’s plans for 2013 and beyond we would highly appreciate your input. We aim at integrating PK/PD in all fields of infectious diseases where dosing aspects may improve clinical outcome and reduce emergence of resistance. Therefore, collaborations with other ESCMID Study Groups are crucial for us. Any comments and willingness to participate are welcome. Please join us for the EPASG Business Meeting on 28 April 2013 at 18.15 h (Salon 22) to discuss the upcoming and future EPASG activities and collaborations.

Education Activities in 2012/2013

  • The hands-on Postgraduate Education Course “A statistical approach to PK-PD analysis in practice”, organised by EPASG, 8 - 11 October 2012 in Athens, Greece, was highly appreciated.
  • EPASG co-organised the Postgraduate Technical Workshop “Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and surveillance: from laboratory to clinic. A EUCAST, ESGARS and EPASG perspective”, 25 - 28 September 2012 in Madrid, Spain. All materials of this workshop are available in the Online Lecture Library.
  • The Postgraduate Education Course: “Antimicrobial Stewardship in Hospitals”, organised by ESGAP will take place on 25 - 26 April 2013 in Zeuthen near Berlin, Germany (course website).

EPASG @ ECCMID 2013

Our website lists all sessions co-organised with EPASG.

Do not miss our EPASG Business Meeting on Sunday, 28 April 2013, 18:15-19:15 (Salon 22). Join us and be part of all activities and collaborations.

Upcoming conferences

  • 1st International Workshop on Clinical Pharmacology of Antifungal Drugs & Fungal Diseases, 26 April 2013 in Berlin, Germany, preceding the ECCMID 2013. This workshop is organised by our EPASG members William Hope and Roger Brüggemann.
  • 1st International Polymyxin Conference held on 2 - 4 May 2013 in Prato, Italy. The registration to this opinion leader conference is now closed for registration due to high demand. Several young ESCMID members could benefit from  ESCMID attendance grants.
  • 7th International Symposium on Microdialysis held on 23 - 24 May 2013 in Poitiers, France, is organised by our EPASG member William Couet.

Projects

EU Projects

  • Many of the founding members, along with other active Study Group members are collaborating in the FP7 funded Project AIDA: “Preserving old antibiotics for the future: assessment of clinical efficacy by a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic approach to optimize effectiveness and reduce resistance for off-patent antibiotics”. As Project AIDA progresses, we will post additional background information and project results to our project website (www.aida-project.eu).
  • A similar team of active Study Group members under the leadership of J. Mouton prepared a proposal in response to the FP7-HEALTH-2013-INNOVATION-1 call “Stratified approaches to antibacterial and/or antifungal treatment.”

Future projects

So far two major projects are planned for 2013 and hopefully suggestions for more activities will be discussed during our business meeting at ECCMID in Berlin (see below for details).

  • New Life for Old Antibiotics: This project will create the first inventory of dosing regimens of old antibiotics in European countries that need an update of their dosing schedules and indication list to preserve their efficacy.
  • ESCMID and EPASG will co-organise the first Conference “Re-development of Old Antibiotics” in October 2014 in Vienna, Austria. The first announcement will be available at ECCMID in Berlin.

If you are interested in actively participating in the planning and organisation of EPASG activities, please become EPASG member on our website (www.escmid.org/epasg). It only takes you some minutes.

Note: Study Group membership is only available for ESCMID members (low basic membership fees are available here). When you are ESCMID member, EPASG membership is free of charge.
