Advancing the surveillance and control of infection through education and research.

Aims and objectives

The ESCMID Study Group for Public Health Microbiology (ESGPHM) provides an interdisciplinary platform, uniting clinical microbiologists, public health specialists, infectious diseases (ID) epidemiologists, and clinicians to advance infection study and control. Committed to advancing joint expertise and knowledge in the detection, surveillance, investigation, epidemic control, and prevention of human microbial diseases from a One Health perspective, we aim to: 

• Provide professionals with information and training in microbiology, epidemiology, and public health practice for the detection, surveillance, investigation, and control of microbial diseases
• Increase awareness of public health microbiology’s crucial role in ID control, outbreak detecting, emerging infections, treatment failures, and global strengthening of laboratory capacity
• Provide a platform for public health microbiology trainees to present their research results to clinical microbiologists/ID specialist and other affiliated disciplines
• Facilitate knowledge exchange across Europe on innovative methods and insights in public health microbiology
