Bylaws of the ESCMID Study Group for Staphylococci and Staphylococcal Diseases

These Bylaws are written rules of conduct of the Study Group, based on the Statutes of the Study Group and in particular Article 5. They set out the form, manner or procedure in which the Study Group is run.

§1 Name

ESCMID Study Group for Staphylococci and Staphylococcal Diseases (ESGS).

§2 Purpose of the Study Group

Staphylococcus aureus remains one of the most frequent bacterial pathogens, both in the community and health-care setting. In recent years, considerable research efforts have been put forward to improve our understanding of its complex pathogenesis and its relationship with the human host as a commensal. While our understanding of the lifestyle and the pathogenic strategies of S. aureus is constantly increasing, the burden of staphylococcal infections is still on the rise and several important questions have remained unresolved.

The aims of the ESCMID Study Group for Staphylococci and Staphylococcal Diseases are to:

  • coordinate fundamental and applied research in this field at the European level
  • facilitate cooperation between microbiologists, clinicians and basic researchers to identify and focus on the most relevant clinical questions and subsequently translate to the clinical field the advance of research
  • establish guidelines in the field of diagnosis, clinical management and prevention of staphylococcal colonisation and infection
  • promote educational activities both at the master degree and PhD levels
  • formalise the existing network of researchers in this field to gain a better visibility of the staphylococcal community.
