Mission & Objectives

Objectives of the SG

Objectives are to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infection due to mycobacteria, including tuberculosis, leprosy and infections due to non-tuberculous mycobacteria. This will be achieved by promoting and supporting research, education, training, and good medical and microbiological practice. In the mission to achieve these objectives, physicians from Eastern and South-Eastern Europe are especially encouraged to apply for the membership in the SG.

Possible complementarity to other Study Groups

  • ESGARS: joint recommendations for surveillance and detection of resistance to antituberculous drugs in tuberculosis, and also recommendations for surveillance of antibiotic resistance in infections due to non-tuberculous mycobacteria (e.g. clarithromycin in M. avium infections, rifampicin in M. kansasii…)
  • ESGEM: joint meeting on performances of molecular markers for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and also non-tuberculous mycobacteria
  • ESGMD: Joint workshop or educational course on molecular diagnosis in tuberculosis and leprosy
  • ESGICH: Joint symposium on mycobacterial infections in immunocompromised hosts
  • EMESG: guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of tuberculous meningitis
  • ESGNI: joint research project of nsosocomial infections due to NTM
  • ESGB: joint fundamental research on NTM growth in biofilms
  • EFWISG: joint research project or symposium on prevalence of NTM in water sources
  • ESGIE: joint research project or symposium on mycobacterial infections in the elderly
