Mission & Objectives

ESGEM represents a group of scientists who share an interest in understanding microbial epidemiology.

Typing is an essential component of any microbial surveillance system from hospital investigations to international public health epidemiology. Advances in molecular typing pushed the limits of microbial surveillance to an unprecedent scale in recent years and this has brought major innovations and opportunities to public attention. However, key challenges remain in microbial epidemiology. These include the continuous development of typing methods that can provide actionable, real-time data; integration of typing data with other relevant data types; establishment and availability of platforms and nomenclatures for microbial typing and epidemiology; understanding microbial evolution and the emergence of virulence and antimicrobial resistance traits. Collaboration between scientists working in this field across the world is therefore essential to standardise and harmonise methodologies and to understand and track the spread of microbial pathogens.

The key objectives of ESGEM are to:

  1. Review the current microbial typing methods and provide recommendations for their appropriate use.
  2. Encourage and support collaborative research between scientists that fosters the development, implementation, and evaluation of microbial typing and epidemiology systems.
  3. Promote the education of young scientists on the most recent developments on microbial typing and epidemiology.

ESGEM cordially invites colleagues actively interested in these areas to join us and contribute to the progress of this exciting international field.
