ESCMID WHO Observerships
18 - 20 June 2013, Copenhagen, Denmark
On June 18-20, the first ESCMID-WHO Observership took place at the Division of Communicable Diseases, Health Security and Environment (DCE) of the WHO Regional Office for Europe. During the 3 day Observership, 4 participants were introduced to WHO activities and programmes, via presentations, “speed dates”, a tour of the department and more in depth visits to the programmes to which the observers had indicated their specific interest. The observers were, Nuno Mendonca from Portugal, Alina Martynova from Russia, Giuseppe Pichieri from the UK and Carmen Munoz-Almagro from Spain. The observers got a broad overview of the scope of WHO and had the opportunity to talk to many different WHO staff working in a variety of public health fields. On the last day the ESCMID president, Gunnar Kahlmeter, joined the programme. The observers had prepared presentations on their observations during the observership as well as opportunities for collaboration with WHO, which led to a fruitful discussion. Both the Observers and WHO staff were very enthusiastic about this first observership, which will be the first of many.
