You can learn more about the various opportunities below and click on the headers to learn how to apply and the details of the process.
ESCMID Awards
The ESCMID Awards are a prestigous collection of prizes that are awarded every year to clinicians, researchers or trainees that have gone above and beyond the call to action in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. ESCMID awards acknowledge excellence and outstanding innovation by researchers, clinicians and other persons contributing to the progression of the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. These awardees are invited to give lectures at ECCMID and are eligible to become ESCMID Fellows.
ESCMID Excellence Award for Scientific Contributions in CM/ID
The ESCMID Excellence Award for Scientific Contributions in CM/ID recognises and acknowledges outstanding contributions in science, education or professional affairs in clinical microbiology and/or infectious diseases.
ESCMID Lifetime Achievements Award
The ESCMID Lifetime Achievements Award recognises and acknowledges an outstanding contribution to ESCMID mission.
ESCMID Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Infection
This award is targeted at someone who has contributed significantly to the area of infection, possibly by driving international policy and/or by driving education standards and/or public engagement but not specifically by a scientific contribution.
Young Investigator Awards
The Young Investigator Award acknowledges excellence in research and stimulates further work at a top scientific level from early career investigators.
Emerging Young Investigators Award
This award aims to acknowledge and support emerging new scientists and/or clinicians from LMIC active in the field of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases.
TAE Outstanding Trainee Awards
The TAE Outstanding Trainee Award recognises multi-skilled medical trainees engaged in extracurricular activities, teaching, networking and collaboration in clinical microbiology (CM) and/or infectious diseases (ID).
ESCMID Research Grants
ESCMID offers about 500,000 EUR annually to support research projects in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. This support comes in the form of individual research grants to young investigators and as a part of our ESCMID Study Groups which are free to join for all ESCMID Members. These grants help to promote collaboration and innovation pushing the boundaries of our specialties.
Individual Research Grants
ESCMID Research Grants help young outstanding investigators pursue ground-breaking research in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases.
Study Group Research Grants
This funding is exclusively available for official ESCMID Study Group research projects in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. ESCMID has over 30 Study Groups in different specialties within the fields of clinical microbiology.
Study Group Collaboration Grant
The Study Group Collaboration Grant is a larger-scale grant for innovative research projects in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases organised by an experienced PI with the support of at least 3 ESCMID Study Groups collaborating together.
ESCMID career support
ESCMID is dedicated to supporting the career development of all those in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. As a part of this, ESCMID offers grants to support new parents or caretakers to allow them time to support those who are dependant on them, as well as attendance grants to participate in educational courses and workshops.
The ESCMID CAREer grant application period is scheduled to open on 22 November 2023, and will conclude on 17 January 2024.
CAREer Grant
The ESCMID CAREer Grant supports members who face challenges in advancing their scientific careers due to responsibilities such as childcare or unexpected situations preventing them from working full-time (illness, caring for elderly parents, etc.). This grant provides financial assistance to members who need to reduce their workload by 20 % or are already working part-time (≤ 80 %) due to family care responsibilities.
ESCMID Observership Funding
To facilitate international training and collaboration, we encourage our members to visit ESCMID Collaborative Centres (most often departments of infectious diseases and/or clinical microbiology) in other countries for five days to one month under the auspices of ESCMID. The Observerships should primarily focus on good clinical and laboratory practice rather than on research activities. Observers should use the observership to make improvements in their home institute (e.g. implementation of a lab technique).
ISID/ESCMID Joint Fellowships
ESCMID and ISID (International Society for Infectious Diseases) jointly sponsor two fellowships (valued at $7,500) annually to perform multidisciplinary clinical and laboratory training abroad in Europe. This fellowship is intended for applicants residing in Low and Lower-middle-income countries (LMIC), as classified by the World Bank. Young colleagues are invited to learn from experienced specialists and to take home new ideas and processes that help improve their clinical or laboratory practice.
Attendance Grants
Attendance Grants support scientists who wish to attend an educational or scientific event organised or endorsed by ESCMID. These cover a wide range of activities such as ESCMID conferences, postgraduate courses and more.
