Practical Diagnosis of Arthropod-Borne Infections, ESCMID Postgraduate Education Course

17 - 19 March 2014, Marseille, France

  • ESCMID Study Group for Coxiella, Anaplasma, Rickettsia and Bartonella (ESCAR)
  • Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire Méditerranée-Infection, Marseille, France
  • Eurotravnet Coordinating Center ECDC, Marseille, France
Course Coordinator
  • Pierre-Edouard Fournier, Marseille, France
Course Objectives

Arthropod-borne infections are caused by a variety of bacterial and viral agents, many of which are considered as emerging pathogens. The diagnosis of these infections is often delayed as their clinical presentations are diverse and few microbiology laboratories throughout Europe are able to detect and identify these pathogens. This course will teach the participants the various diagnostic aspects of arthropod-borne diseases, including cell culture, molecular detection, MALDI-TOF MS identification, serology, arthropod identification as well as updates on arthropod-borne infections by skilled experts. Lectures presenting state-of-the-art diagnosis and management of these infections will be followed by practical sessions in groups of 5 persons.

Course Venue

Espace Ethique Méditerranéen
Hôpital de la Timone
Bd Jean Moulin
13385 Marseille cedex 5, France

Practical sessions:
Unité des Rickettsies
Faculté de Médecine

Target Audience

15 –30 clinical microbiologists and infectious disease specialists.

Attendance Grants

ESCMID provides a number of attendance grants for ESCMID “young scientist members”. The grant covers the registration fee, but not travel costs. Please apply on this website (see link on the right) before 31 December 2013. Applicants will be informed about their acceptance by 14 January 2014.
