Aleksandra Barac has dedicated seven years of work experience in the field of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases to combatting infectious diseases to the benefit of her patients. She is actively working on two national and one international project; has received numerous awards for scientific achievements; has published about 30 scientific articles; and serves as an editor of the Journal of Infections in Developing Countries (JIDC) and reviewer for 15 scientific journals. Through her many activities, she has developed strong international networks in the field. Her research focuses primarily on the treatment and diagnosis of fungal diseases and unknown febrile conditions. Her training achievements are the result of strong motivation, hard work, innovative ideas and a desire to help patients suffering from infectious diseases.

Paola Tatarelli is a resident in Infectious Diseases at the University of Genoa. Since 2012 she continuously pursued her personal education through laboratory activities, scientific meetings, post-graduate courses and by completing a six-month hands-on training in emergency medicine. For the last three years, she’s been involved in the “CASA Project”, a partnership among the Italian Institute of Health, the Tigray Health Bureau of Ethiopia and Mekelle University, aimed at improving the quality of care of HIV/AIDS patients. She spent two months in Tigray providing clinical support to health workers. She became a clinical trainer and authored various training materials, including both specialist knowledge on HIV-related topics and communication tools. She periodically returns to Ethiopia to carry on a peer-to-peer educational programme that helps health workers and local patients' associations communicate with the HIV-infected and promote retention in care. Beyond the usual working activities, her commitment to infectious diseases brought her to volunteer both in Italy and abroad.
