ESCMID marks European Antibiotic Awareness Day

This year 16 November highlights the European Antibiotic Awareness Day. It has the support of all global health organisations, such as WHO, WHO Europe and ECDC, and many societies (e.g. Antibiotic Action by BSAC), including ESCMID. Our dedication to the timely and correct use of antibiotics has long traditions. Since many years, and through our Study Groups such as ESGARS and ESGAP, we involve ourselves strongly in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. We were involved in EARSS and are now in EARS-Net (from ECDC). Together with ECDC, we also drive the important standardisation and harmonisation of susceptibility testing through the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing EUCAST. More recently, and together with WHO Europe and RIVM (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu, The Netherlands) we recently signed a memorandum of understanding see here in which the three parties pledge scientific and financial help to European countries outside the EU to set up surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in a similar way to what is done in EARS-Net (the CAESAR project). The ESCMID website and the recently relaunched ESCMID Online Lecture Library attest to the deep involvement in all issues pertaining to the use and misuse of antimicrobials.
