The summer is here! If you're taking time off in the coming weeks, why not use the time to apply for a research grant or nominate someone for an Excellence or Young Investigator Award. Trainees may be interested in applying for a TAE Award for Training Achievment. We are pleased to report on a successful ECCMID 2015 Programme Committee Meeting where experts on various CM & ID fields from all over the world constructed the framework for a superb programme. In addition, registration for three autumn courses has just opened. And CMI and NMNI have several new hot hopic, original and many other other articles. Enjoy this issue!

The Society

Society soliciting nominations for Excellence and Young Investigator Awards

We celebrate the efforts of those who work to advance the fields of CM and ID through our awards programme. The Excellence Award is the highest honour given by ESCMID and is awarded to an individual who has made great contributions to the fields of CM/ID. The Young Investigator Awards recognize the achievements of up to two persons under 40 years-of-age. About Excellence Award; about Young Investigator Award. Deadline: 12 November 2014.

ESCMID's committment to International Affairs

During Giuseppe Cornaglia's tenure as a member of the Executive Committee, he worked to build-up ESCMID's international affairs programme. ESCMID is collaborating with societies and individuals in Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, China, India, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, the Russian Federation, and Former USSR Asian Republics. ESCMID has now appointed him as the International Affairs Director and the leader of the recently formed ESCMID International Affairs Subcommittee (EIAS).


Scientific Affairs

Did you know that you can receive up to EUR 20'000 for your research project?

Apply for an ESCMID Research Grant to pursue groundbreaking research in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. Deadline: 14 October 2014, 12.00 CET.

ESGNI survey on precaution & isolation measures – take part!

During ECCMID 2014, 177 participants from 53 countries completed the survey of the ESCMID Study Group for Nosocomial Infections (ESGNI). The preliminary results are promising, so we call on you to also complete the survey. Your input is crucial to help determine ESCMID's future activities in this field. Deadline: 4 September 2014


Professional Affairs

Apply now for TAE Award for Training Achievements!

If you are still in specialty training and 35 years-of-age or younger, consider applying! The award includes free registration for any ESCMID 2015 educational activity up to a maximum value of EUR 1'000. Remaining funds may be used for a journal subscription. Additionally up to EUR 500 will be reimbursed for travel expenses to the educational event.

Three new ESCMID Collaborative Centres in France, South Africa and Switzerland - now 73 Centres for Observers to choose from!



Back to school - online over summer!

This year's Summer School was again a hot event covering diverse topics in CM/ID as well as career advice.

Registration open for course: Infection Management in the Elderly: Room for Improvement

The course takes place from 2 - 3 October 2014 in Annecy, France. Age-related changes in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics occur with several drugs and often need to be considered for an optimal dosing regimen of antimicrobials. The aim is to provide participants with an updated insight into PK/PD concepts of antimicrobial therapy for geriatric patients.

Registration open for ESCMID-SHEA Training Course in Hospital Epidemiology

This popular annual course will be held this year in Phuket, Thailand from 20 –  23 October 2014. Participants may choose between two modules: A) Healthcare-associated Infection Prevention and Management Core Module
B) Applied Infection Control Module.

Registration open for course: How to Design and Perform your Clinical Studies in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology

The purpose of this workshop in Tübingen, Germany from 7-8 November 2014 is to review the correct methodology and the common pitfalls in the most common designs that are used in clinical studies: randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, studies looking at risk factors for a bad outcome, before-after (ecological) studies and analyses of very large databases.

Start planning now to attend. Our international Programme Committee with experts from diverse CM and ID fields recently met and have set the framework for another excellent congress.

ESCMID Conference on Reviving Old Antibiotics - Registration open, abstracts accepted!

ESCMID is organising the first Conference on Reviving Old Antibiotics in Vienna, Austria, from 22-24 October 2014. Until June 30, the registration is open to ESCMID members only. After July 1, ESCMID members and non-members may both register. Do you want to take part? Register and submit a poster abstract online (before 31 July 2014) on the conference website.

ESCMID Conference on Vaccines: Vaccines for Mutual Protection!

This conference will bring together world-leading experts to debate the many-sided correlations between vaccines, medicine and society at the dawn of the third millennium. This third edtion on vaccines takes place from 6 - 8 March 2015 in Lisbon, Portugal. Stay updated on Registration and abstract submission will open in Summer 2014!
