For the first time, a Chinese-made vaccine receives World Health Organization endorsement. The vaccine – formally known as SA 14-14-2 – protects children against Japanese encephalitis, a viral brain infection common in parts of east and south Asia.

Other Chinese-made vaccines are on the same tracks, like Hecolin, a hepatitis E vaccine, that was presented – for the first time on European soil – at the ESCMID Conference on the Impact of Vaccines on Public Health earlier this year. The presentation is freely available on the ESCMID website.

Infection control and preventive measures: an ESCMID priority

Healthcare- associated  infections (HAIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Therapy is becoming ever more difficult due to the increasing rate of antimicrobial resistance among common HAI pathogens. Over the last decade, multi-drug-resistant bacteria have been implicated in severe invasive infections and their occurrence has increased steadily. Patients are starting to see the rate of HAI and antibiotic resistance as an important indicator of quality of care. After presenting in Berlin the first European Guidelines on infection control to reduce the spreading of multidrug-resistant bacteria in hospitalised patients, ESCMID is going to further potentiate its involvement in infection control. A new ESCMID Committee for Infection Control is now on the way of being organised. Major goals will be: to harmonise infection control and preventive measures in all European countries and reduce morbidity and mortality related to HAI. Development of new educational tools as well as specific guidelines and expert opinion with “real life” applicability documents are a major focus. Research will be coordinated through dedicated networking.
