Dear Colleague,
The first ESCMID newsletter of the New Year has plenty of significant information on  ESCMID activities, and this is meant to fulfil ESCMID’s New Year’s resolution
of providing its members with much more news. Two other ESCMID newsletters -one from the Trainee Association of ESCMID and the other from the ESCMID PK/PD of Anti-Infectives Study Group -were published in January as well;
the publication of the ESCMID Manual of Microbiology will be announced
at ECCMID 2012; the TAE Steering Committee election will take place next month; the CMI editor’s choice is an article by a ESCMID Executive Committee member.
There are many attendance grants available for attending postgraduate courses and workshops. An extended deadline is guaranteed for late-breaker abstracts

Manual of Microbiology announcement of publication at ECCMID

ESCMID is proud to announce the publication of the Manual of Microbiology, which can be purchased at ECCMID 2012. The Manual is the result of the work and efforts of CM/ID experts from ESCMID and SFM to present a European perspective on Clinical Microbiology.

Extended deadline for late-breaker abstracts

Haven’t submitted your abstract for ECCMID 2012 yet? Do you have cutting-edge results to present? As a CM/ID leading congress, ECCMID offers you an exceptional opportunity: you may still participate by presenting your late-breaker abstract by 17 February 2012. Don’t pass up the chance!

TAE Call for candidates for Steering Committee election

Young ESCMID members could become the protagonists of the next four years (2012-2016) at ESCMID by joining the the TAE -Trainee Association of ESCMID- Steering Committee, as two places will be vacant in April 2012. The two new members will be elected in February 2012.

If your profile matches the candidate requirements, nominate yourself for the election from 10-31 January 2012.

The January newsletter of the TAE features the association’s latest activities and urges everyone to participate. 5th International Day for Fighting Infection - St.George's Day

Before we know it, the winter will be over and the spring  will be upon us along with the 5th International Day for Fighting Infection. The conference -The Antibiotic Days- will be held as usual on St. George’s Day, and its main topic is the fascinating history of antibiotics. The conference venue will be St. Mary’s Hospital in London, where penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming.

Between 20 and 40 CM/ID trainees and specialists are called upon to update their knowledge on surveillance, healthcare and diagnostics of infections caused by emerging diseases. This interesting course is organised by the Infectiopôle Sud scientific foundation (Marseille, France), the EuroTravNet coordinating centre of ECDC (Marseille, France) and the  Istituto Nazionale per le Malattie Infettive L. Spallanzani (Rome, Italy).

Burden of Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis: how real is the threat?

As the author’s article emphasises, the media have been focusing on the topic of the current CMI editor’s choice demonstrating how far the media influence can go. Some studies on the increase in hospitalizations, trends and mortality for bacterial infective endocarditis in the US—mainly caused by S. Aurerus—further aroused media interest in the subject. However, these interesting studies have a shadow side, and this article delves into the story unveiling important information.

EPASG has been showing to be a highly active  ESCMID Study Groups since its recent foundation in 2010. New entry in EU Partner Search platform

ESCMID offers the possibility to match a partner seeker with a partner request for an interesting CM/ID project. The Barcelona Centre for International Health Research -CRESIB- is looking for a partner for a collaborative research project called Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance of bacteria causing neonatal sepsis.
