Surveillance and early warning systems of healthcare-associated infections

This module on surveillance aimed at providing course participants a more in-depth understanding of sur-veillance methods for specific healthcare-associated infections (HAI) types and patient risk groups, as well as for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and anti-microbial consumption, addressing European ECDCsurveillance methods where appropriate. Point prevalence surveys of HAIs and IPC structure and process indicators at the hospital level have been addressed as well as different approaches to organise surveillance at hospital and national level and to report hospital-based structure, process and outcome indicators. Finally, participants also obtained a better understanding of different options to organise a rapid alert system for the detection of new threats and outbreaks related to HAIs and AMR at hospital and national level. Each session includes lecture(s) and interactive exercises (e.g. case presentations).

Improving antibiotic prescription and infection control in the emergency room

Emergency Rooms (ERs) are a challenging environment: time is scarce, the workload too high and the composition of medical teams constantly changing. As a significant number of ER admitted patients are infected, awareness and expertise on antibiotic prescription and infection control is paramount: Typically, ERs are the first place for antimicrobial decision, where medical teams need to be able to rapidly detect severe cases and start administering adequate antimicrobial therapy in a timely fashion. Also after ER admission, when patients are transferred to the wards, the continuity of the prescribed therapy needs to be ensured to increase the chances of successful treatment. In addition, ERs are the central place for screening and isolation of infected patients before they are moved to the wards, so that the safety of other patients and healthcare workers can be guaranteed.

This one-day course aimed to improve practices on diagnosis, antimicrobial treatment and screening of patients in the ER as well as their isolation if need be. It included hands-on sessions and simulations to anchor the learned principles.

The workshop was co-organized by Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (LearningHealth Luz Saúde), Portugal and Hospital La Paz, Spain.

EUCIC basic module in infection prevention and control

This initial basic module organized by EUCIC represents the first step to achieve the above-mentioned objectives. Infection Prevention and Control is a hands-on course including bedside teaching with simulated patients played by professional actors. You had the opportunity to be taught face-to-face by top experts from different academic centers in Europe, who cover all major aspects of IPC in the hospital. We used modern techniques to make invisible transmission of microbes visible to everybody’s eyes.
