This year’s 25th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases ECCMID 2015 has come to a close. As many as 10,697 people from 112 countries attended ECCMID with the top countries of provenance being the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, and France. The congress featured more than 200 sessions covering the entire field of infectious diseases and clinical microbiology, including 11 keynote lectures, almost 100 symposia and oral sessions, 19 educational workshops and 18 meet-the-expert sessions. It also offered attendees 27 integrated symposia and 165 exhibitors this year. More than 3,000 abstracts were presented.
The highlights of this year’s congress included the keynote speeches by the award winners on research about hospital epidemiology, respiratory tract infections, antimicrobial therapy for ICU patients and the treatment of emerging gastrointestinal pathogens. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) received an exceptional award to recognize the charity’s huge contribution to global health over the last 40 years, as most recently illustrated in its enormous efforts in fighting Ebola across Africa. Also popular were the pro-and-con debates, as well as novelties including oral sessions dedicated to late-breaking abstracts and a pipeline corner, which for the first time provided smaller biotechnology companies a platform to present data on their products in development.
