29 December 2020

Dear colleagues,

As 2020 draws to a close, we are looking back at what was an exceptionally eventful year in the field of infection, and the ESCMID events and activities over the previous 12 months.

Best regards,
ESCMID Executive Office.

ESCMID moves online in response to COVID-19

With in-person events and meetings not being possible, ESCMID moved to meeting in an online context.

In response to the challenges presented by the emergence of COVID-19, a series of informative group teleconferences between ESCMID and its affiliated societies were held starting in March, which allowed transparent communication of the emerging situation in various countries in real-time.

Starting in early April of 2020, a series of webinars on COVID-19 were held, with inputs from EUCIC, EITaF, UEMS, and the ESCMID International Affairs Subcommittee making for a comprehensive view of COVID-19 across 7 evenings during the first wave of the outbreak.

More recently, EUCAST, as well as several study groups, have begun to hold their own online events, and we look forward to being able to deliver more online content for ESCMID members into the future.

ESCMID conferences go online

In September, ESCMID hosted their first ever fully online conference. Over three days, more than 100 scientific symposia, keynotes, meet-the-expert sessions and practical workshops were presented completely live on a wide range of topics surrounding COVID-19.

The conference was well received, with thousands of participants tuning in from across the world for live and on-demand viewing. With several new and innovative presentation formats, ESCMID is off to a fantastic start for future interactive online events!

New ESCMID Leadership

With the cancellation of the 30th ECCMID, the usual in-person ESCMID Assembly of Members was not possible, along with the traditional change-of-office procedures within the ESCMID Executive Committee.

We welcomed Jon S. Friedland as the new Scientific Affairs Officer, and Robert Leo Skov as the new Education Officer.

Mario Poljak left the Executive Committee after 8 years, including a 2 year period as ESCMID President between 2016 and 2018. Evelina Tacconelli also left her position as Guidelines Officer, however will continue as an ad-hoc member as the EUCIC Chairperson.

The ad-hoc executive office of ECCMID Programme Director was also passed from Winfried V. Kern to Jacob Moran-Gilad.

ECCMID 2020 – A sad cancellation

As the COVID-19 Pandemic took hold in Europe early on in the year, the unfortunate but necessary decision was made to cancel the 30th European Congress on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID).

Our heartfelt thanks go to the ESCMID Study Groups, Subcommittees, Affiliated Societies and of course the ECCMID Programme Committee for the work done on the scientific programme. Their efforts have been incorporated into the planning progress for 2021, helping to ensure that the 31st ECCMID next July will have the most comprehensive and scientifically rich programme in congress history.
