September 2013

Dear Colleague,
With the end of summer comes a buzz of activity from the Society. We are pleased to announce that abstracts are now being accepted for ECCMID 2014 and that the scientific programme is online! This month our respective Study Group asks all those working with critically-ill patients to fill out a survey on salvage treatment for infections in the critically ill. Please be reminded that applications and nominations are still being accepted for research grants and our awards. This issue includes an ESCMID statement on infection control, which will be followed by numerous initiatives. We would also like to draw your attention to our many exciting upcoming events such the Joint ESCMID/ECDC/IFIC symposium - MDR Gram negatives: the real Armageddon on 15 March 2014 and the ESCMID Conference on Reviving Old Antibiotics on 22-24 October 2014. And finally, the October issue of CMI features articles on the big three killers.

Infection control and preventive measures: an ESCMID priority

After presenting in Berlin the first European Guidelines on infection control to reduce the spreading of multidrug-resistant bacteria in hospitalised patients, ESCMID is going to further potentiate its involvement in infection control. A new ESCMID Committee for Infection Control is now on the way of being organised. Major goals will be: to harmonise infection control and preventive measures in all European countries and reduce morbidity and mortality related to HAI. Development of new educational tools as well as specific guidelines and expert opinion with “real life” applicability documents are a major focus. Research will be coordinated through dedicated networking.

ECCMID 2014 abstract submission is open and the programme is now online!

Submit your abstract online until 10 December. While on our website, don't forget to look at the preliminary scientific programme. A diverse team of 31 experts from 16 different countries in the field has worked diligently to put together an excellent mix of talks and sessions with something for everyone.

MDR Gram negatives: the real Armageddon

During the 2014 International Federation of Infection Control (IFIC) Congress the joint ESCMID/ECDC/IFIC symposium will cover the following relevant topics on 15 March 2014:

  • Priorities in the prevention and control of multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in hospitals
  • Epidemiology of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) in Europe, including cross-border issues
  • European guidelines to control MDR Gram-negative bacteria in hospitalised patients

Reserve 22-24 October 2014 for the ESCMID Conference on Reviving Old Antibiotics!

Experts will present and summarise currently available knowledge regarding optimised clinical use of off-patent antibiotics and will discuss gaps of knowledge and future areas of research as well as adapting breakpoints, enriching treatment guidelines, and implications for regulatory issues. The main conference aim is to drive the optimised usage of old antibiotics, especially indications and dosage regimens, as a key contribution to preserving the efficacy of these essential drugs in an era of escalating multi-drug resistance.
