ESCMID offers a new collaborative centre for observerships in Istanbul

The clinical microbiology department at the Marmara University Pendik Hospital in Istanbul has been approved as a new ESCMID Collaborative Centre. The microbiology department is one of the centres for excellence for research and practice in Turkey. With subspecialty units for bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics and serology it undertakes several research projects and runs the central clinical laboratory that processes all samples from seven government hospitals. The centre serves as a central laboratory for molecular diagnosis and offers a wide range of molecular tests. It has high competences in the diagnosis of anaerobic infections and in antimicrobial resistance. More information may be found on the ESCMID website.

The deadline is approaching to nominate candidates for three ESCMID awards

You have time until 10 November at 12:00 noon CET to apply or nominate candidates for three types of awards. The most prestigious is the ESCMID Award for Excellence in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in recognition of an outstanding lifetime contribution to science, education or professional affairs in the field of infection. But you may also nominate a colleague for the Young Investigator Award for Research in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, which rewards outstanding research and stimulates further studies at the highest scientific level, or you may apply for the TAE Awards for Training Achievements that recognize outstanding trainees in the field.

European federation conducts survey on the microbiologist profession

We would like to encourage microbiologists – particularly clinical microbiologists – in the ESCMID network to fill in a survey that follows on from a similar study conducted earlier this year by Manchester Metropolitan University in collaboration with the Federation of European Microbiology Societies (FEMS). The objective of the study is to help strengthen the profession, and to inform microbiology students about career identities and perspectives. Findings will be presented in 2016.
