Aims of ESGAP

  • To provide a uniting European forum for those medical personnel and scientists actively involved in antibiotic stewardship at local, national and international levels.
  • To provide opportunities for improved cooperation and to establish links between existing networks of similar programmes and those concerned with antibiotic resistance.
  • To promote a better understanding of factors involved in the misuse of antibiotics.
  • To promote awareness of antibiotic misuse.
  • To contribute to an understanding of the epidemiology of antibiotic misuse in Europe.
  • To standardise antibiotic policies, to establish their comparability and to facilitate the collection of data within Europe on the most efficacious means of promoting good antibiotic use.
  • To identify problems of antimicrobial resistance related to antimicrobial use and to formulate strategies of antibiotic stewardship designed to control resistance.
  • To provide an opportunity for training in the appropriate use of antibiotics.
  • To offer the opportunity for sharing expertise and for improved access to European data.

Membership Guidelines

Membership of ESGAP is open to those interested in good quality antibiotic prescribing at local, national and international levels, including representatives from the government or corporate bodies. All members must be approved by the ESGAP Executive Committee.

Structural Organisation of ESGAP

An executive committee of nine members will be appointed by the membership for a period of two years. Executive committee members can be appointed for a maximum of two consecutive terms. The executive committee will appoint a president, a secretary and a treasurer to act on behalf of the Study Group. The ESGAP will hold a meeting for all members at least once a year, held preferably at the European Congress for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID). Specific projects for study and project coordinators will be identified at this meeting. The coordinators of the project will join the executive committee.

Activities of ESGAP

Specific projects undertaken by the Study Group will be presented in workshops or symposia organised during the ECCMID. The Study Group will be responsible for organising training sessions on antibiotic stewardship and good prescribing in collaboration with the education officer of ESCMID and other suitable organisations. The Study Group will work with other ESCMID study groups whose interests overlap with those of the ESGAP. The ESGAP will collaborate with other programmes subsidised by the WHO, the EU, industry and other organisations involved in antimicrobial surveillance.
