Future projects
So far two major projects are planned for 2013 and hopefully suggestions for more activities will be discussed during our business meeting at ECCMID in Berlin (see below for details).
- New Life for Old Antibiotics: This project will create the first inventory of dosing regimens of old antibiotics in European countries that need an update of their dosing schedules and indication list to preserve their efficacy.
- ESCMID and EPASG will co-organise the first Conference “Re-development of Old Antibiotics” in October 2014 in Vienna, Austria. The first announcement will be available at ECCMID in Berlin.
EU Projects
- Many of the founding members, along with other active Study Group members are collaborating in the FP7 funded Project AIDA: “Preserving old antibiotics for the future: assessment of clinical efficacy by a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic approach to optimize effectiveness and reduce resistance for off-patent antibiotics”. As Project AIDA progresses, we will post additional background information and project results to our project website (www.aida-project.eu).
- A similar team of active Study Group members under the leadership of J. Mouton prepared a proposal in response to the FP7-HEALTH-2013-INNOVATION-1 call “Stratified approaches to antibacterial and/or antifungal treatment.”
Main educational activities in 2012/2013
- The hands-on Postgraduate Education Course “A statistical approach to PK-PD analysis in practice”, organised by EPASG, 8 - 11 October 2012 in Athens, Greece, was highly appreciated.
- EPASG co-organised the Postgraduate Technical Workshop “Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and surveillance: from laboratory to clinic. A EUCAST, ESGARS and EPASG perspective”, 25 - 28 September 2012 in Madrid, Spain. All materials of this workshop are available in the Online Lecture Library.
- The Postgraduate Education Course: “Antimicrobial Stewardship in Hospitals”, organised by ESGAP will take place on 25 - 26 April 2013 in Zeuthen near Berlin, Germany.
- 31 March, 8.45-10.45
Educational Workshop EW02 "Optimising treatment based on a pharmacodynamic approach: an interactive workshop using clinical cases" - 31 March, 16.30-18.30
2-hour Symposium "Update in drug development" - 1 April, 18.15-19.15 (Meeting Room 11)
EPASG Business Meeting

FP7-HEALTH.2011.2.3.1-1 Investigator-driven clinical trials of off-patent antibiotics.
Topic: Defining optimal treatment regimens (including drug choice, combinations, dosing, duration of therapy, PK/PD, individualisation) of off-patent antimicrobial agents for therapy of difficult-to-treat infections caused by multidrug resistant bacterial pathogens in terms of maximising clinical benefit and minimizing selection of resistance.
The application for this two-stage grant has been accepted by the European Commission.
We will proceed with our planning for 3 randomised clinical trials, in vitro, animal studies, as well as dissemination and educational activities
