Visiting Professorship

ESCMID is proud to endorse visiting professors and experts who are invited to give talks, share experiences, or provide advice through local institutions. These exchanges help make knowledge-sharing more accessible to the wider community. While ESCMID does not fund the visit (with the potential exception of institutions from low-income countries), we recognise the valuable contributions of both the inviting institution and the esteemed guests by providing a certificate of ESCMID endorsement.

About

Professorship criteria and eligibility

As a visiting professor, your expertise in Infectious Diseases (ID), Clinical Microbiology (CM), and/or Infection Control (IC) should be globally recognised, as well as your scientific contributions. We also welcome specialist researchers who have recently made ground-breaking advances in these fields. Please note that selection is not based on age, career stage, or the title of “Professor”. However, the inviting institute and the visitor should be from different countries to maximise the international experience. Eligible institutions include:

  • Public hospitals
  • University hospitals
  • Private hospitals
  • Public laboratories
  • University hospital laboratories
  • Private laboratories
  • Institutions dealing with Public Health

Whenever an expert member of the Society is invited by an institution, an official approval and invitation letter should be forwarded to ESCMID to start the process. After carefully considering the objectives of the visit and confirming its added value for the local institution, the Executive Committee (EC) may offer endorsement.

Costs

ESCMID does not cover any costs related to the visit.

However, for institutions from low-income countries (LIC)*, funding for certain expenses may be discussed if the visit holds high importance for scientific development and/or for improving the diagnosis, management, and prevention of infections within the host country. If financial support is needed, the hosting institution should work together with our Executive Committee (EC) to assess whether travel or accommodation costs can be partially covered. The expert’s CV, a letter from the director of the hosting institution, and a justification of the importance of the visit for the local institution and country should then be provided at least six months before the visit for consideration.
