ESCMID Observership

To facilitate international training and collaboration, we encourage our members to visit ESCMID Collaborative Centres (most often departments of infectious diseases and/or clinical microbiology) in other countries for one day to one month under the auspices of ESCMID. The Observerships should primarily focus on good clinical and laboratory practice rather than on research activities.

Funding

ESCMID subsidises travel costs and subsistence for outside-of-country visits to a maximum of EUR 1’200 as follows:

  • EUR 500 max. for travel expenses (air ticket, train ticket, car expenses at EUR 0.30 per km)
  • EUR 70 per diem (up to a maximum of 10 days)

(reimbursement rules are valid from 17 November 2010)

ESCMID only supports applications that are submitted and accepted prior to the intended visit; and payment will be made after we receive proof of effectively incurred expenses.

Important:
Please be aware that the application has to be submitted at least 2 months before the intended Observership visit starts.

Eligibility criteria

The programme is open to full ESCMID members only, and a member may only receive funding for one Observership within 12 months. There are no age restrictions. Members working at Collaborative Centres will be given priority. The Observership can only take place in Collaborative Centres and only outside-of-country visits will be sponsored. Every application for support is subject to review and approval by ESCMID.

Application procedure

ESCMID provides an online application form for Observerships. Applications can be submitted throughout the year and will be dealt with within 2 months. Before applying, you must clarify all details of your stay with the ESCMID Collaborative Centre that you intend to visit. If you contact an ESCMID Collaborative Centre and you do not receive an answer within 3 weeks, please contact . You also need to submit the name and email of a contact person at the Centre.

Report

After the visit, the Observer will be required to complete the official evaluation forms including a report to be published on the ESCMID and on the Collaborative Centre website or in other ESCMID publications.

A certificate of attendance might be issued after written confirmation (email sufficient) of the ECC Host and completion of the above-mentioned report. This certificate provides proof of attendance, but not proof of proficiency in any of the specialities.

The names of successful applicants may be published on the ESCMID website and other ESCMID publications.
