ESCMID Panorama

ESCMID Observership

To facilitate international training and collaboration, we encourage our members to visit ESCMID Collaborative Centres (most often departments of infectious diseases and/or clinical microbiology) in other countries for one day to one month under the auspices of ESCMID. The Observerships should primarily focus on good clinical and laboratory practice rather than on research activities.

Two new initiatives are underway. ESCMID and the World Health Organisation (WHO) invite 5 ESCMID members (of either specialty) from 5 different countries to visit WHO’s European Regional Office in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The second initiative with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in Stockholm, Sweden offers this opportunity in their Centre. Details of ECDC Observership will be published soon.

Funding

ESCMID subsidises travel costs and subsistence for outside-of-country visits to a maximum of EUR 1’200 as follows:

  • EUR 500 max. for travel expenses (air ticket, train ticket, car expenses at EUR 0.30 per km)
  • EUR 70 per diem (up to a maximum of 10 days)

ESCMID only supports applications that are submitted and accepted prior to the intended visit; and payment will be made after we receive proof of effectively incurred expenses.

Important:
Please be aware that the application has to be submitted at least 2 months before the intended Observership visit starts.

Eligibility criteria

The programme is open to full ESCMID members only, and a member can only receive funding for one Observership within 12 months. There are no age restrictions. Members working at Collaborative Centres will be given priority. The Observership can only take place in Collaborative Centres and only outside-of-country visits will be sponsored. Every application for support is subject to review and approval by ESCMID.

Application procedure

(New since 3 April 2013!) ESCMID members submit their request for an ESCMID Observership visit through an online application form directly to the ESCMID Collaborative Centre (ECC). An ESCMID member can only submit one Observership request at a time. Therefore, the person won’t be able to submit a new request until the review process is completed by the ECC.

New application procedure:

  1. Search for ECCs (www.escmid.org/ECCsearch)
  2. Select a Collaborative Centre (ECC) which you want to visit
  3. Login as ESCMID member with your login details
  4. Click on the link ‘Apply now for Observership visit’ and submit your request for an Observership through the online application form
  5. The ECC will review the request for an Observership visit
  6. If required, the ECC will clarify details of visit with requester
  7. The ECC will accept or reject the request for an Observership
  8. Upon approval by ECC, the review process of the application by ESCMID will start.
  9. ESCMID Office will inform the applicant about the evaluation results.

Application deadline

For the general ESCMID Observership programme, applications can be submitted throughout the year.

The request for Observership has to be submitted at least 2 months before the intended visit starts. Please consider that the review process by the ECC host and by ESCMID can take 2 months. We recommend that you submit your request as early as possible so that you have enough time for your travel arrangements.

Exception: For the new ESCMID ECDC Observership and the ESCMID WHO Observership only one application call per year (until further notice). For deadlines, please check the respective websites (ECDC Observerships, WHO Observerships) which will be published soon.

Report

After the visit, the Observer will be required to complete the official evaluation forms including a report to be published on the ESCMID and on the Collaborative Centre website or in other ESCMID publications.
A certificate of attendance might be issued after written confirmation (email sufficient) of the ECC Host and completion of the above-mentioned report. This certificate provides proof of attendance, but not proof of proficiency in any of the specialities.
The names of successful applicants may be published on the ESCMID website and other ESCMID publications.
