ECCMID 2021: Covid - Woman aged 90 died with double variant infection
It is possible to catch two Covid variants at the same time, experts are warning after seeing a double infection in a 90-year-old woman who became sick with the Alpha and Beta types first identified in the UK and South Africa. Her doctors suspect she contracted the infections from two different people. They believe it is the first documented case of its kind and, although rare, similar dual infections are happening. Her case is being discussed at this year's European Congress on Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases - ECCMID 2021. Read more on the story below.

ECCMID study finds pet owners can pass on COVID-19 to their cats and dogs
Researchers from Utrecht University sent a mobile veterinary clinic to households in the Netherlands that had tested positive for Covid at some point in the past 200 days. Swabs were taken from their pet cats and dogs to test for evidence of a current infection, while blood samples were also tested for antibodies suggesting a past exposure to Covid. The results of this study is being presented at ECCMID 2021 and has been written about across many media outlets. Read more on the story below.

Several international societies come together to remove another glass ceiling for women in medicine and science:
Members of ESCMID, the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), and the Swiss Society of Infectious Diseases (SSI) have teamed up to address the issue of unintended gender bias of early-career awards. They have released a joint position paper with recommendations on how to deal fairly with career breaks, whether full-time or just reduced workload, when assessing eligibility for these early-career awards.
This paper was the basis for the creation of the ESCMID CAREer grant aimed to support those individuals who want to advance their scientific career and have started a family.
