Course Objectives

Infections in the elderly have many implications that are underestimated. Many of the aspects of prevention and management of these infections have not been studied in sufficient detail. Infection remains the enemy of the aged and despite the aging of our population, infections are the main cause of morbidity and mortality. The treatment of infections in the elderly is complicated by multidrug resistance (MDR) caused by exposure to the health care system and by special considerations related to dosing and drug interactions. Long-term health care facilities serve as reservoirs for MDR bacteria that have implications for hospitals and for the community. Infection prevention and control is key to improving survival and quality of life of the elderly, while minimising spread of antibiotic resistance.

This course will address for the first time the special features of infections in the elderly. Top investigators in Europe will review the literature and discuss aspects of prevention and management of these infections. The first day will be devoted to surveillance and infection control in long-term health care facilities by reviewing the data available in Europe. On the second day the considerations surrounding the epidemiology, clinical presentation, management and outcomes of bacterial, viral and specific infections will be reviewed.

Throughout the course we will open the discussion to areas where data are missing and further research is needed. Participation of attendees will be encouraged through interactive case scenarios. The faculty represents 10 different countries in Europe and Middle East.
