EUCIC Working Groups

As an ESCMID standing committee, the European Committee on Infection Control (EUCIC) aims to take a leading role in establishing a gold standard for infection control in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and communities across European countries. Our primary goal is to reduce morbidity and mortality linked to healthcare-associated infections. To achieve this, EUCIC operates through focused Working Groups. The Guidance Working Group dives into the strategy and development of guidance documents. With experts dedicated to enhancing the accessibility, dissemination, and implementation of cutting-edge scientific evidence, our mission is to combat hospital-acquired infections (HAI) and the burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) for hospitalised patients and community healthcare settings.

At the forefront of innovation, the e-Learning and Educational Activities Outside Europe Working Group assesses teaching methods for educational activities in the field of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC). From immersive e-learning experiences to personalised learning journeys, cooperative learning dynamics, open-ended questioning, and engaging games and puzzles, our dynamic team seeks to empower learners. Innovative tools are also used to craft educational materials that spark meaningful discussion, which are then shared with teams across Europe and beyond. We aim to go beyond boundaries to cultivate excellence worldwide, even assessing requests for IPC courses outside Europe for possible integration within the EUCIC certification.

The IPC Accreditation Working Group is dedicated to healthcare excellence, focusing on pioneering a framework for volunteer hospital accreditation in IPC. Our mission is to assess and refine a volunteer accreditation process that champions effective infection prevention measures in hospitals. By developing this framework, we aim to empower healthcare centres to implement best practices, shaping the future of healthcare accreditation and driving progress in patient safety.

The UEMS Working Group promotes European healthcare standards through recognition and accreditation of infection control at the European level. Our shared mission with the UEMS Multidisciplinary Joint Committee on Infection Control started as a collaborative invitation from UEMS Infectious Diseases (ID) and Medical Microbiology (MM) Sections. Today, we aim develop unified and accredited standards across disciplines, safeguarding public health across Europe.

The Communication and Dissemination Working Group focuses on developing EUCIC’s dynamic communication strategies in the field of IPC. Our working group shares EUCIC's achievements with peers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. We are also the proud creative and scientific heads of the EUCIC Newsletter and provide regular updates on the latest scientific findings in IPC.

The Research Working Group leads the creation of a vibrant research network in IPC. This network will serve as a dynamic platform for collaborative brainstorming and proposal development, aimed at securing dedicated research funding through joint ESCMID member projects. We are also committed to ensuring data homogeneity and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance for seamless exchange of data and samples across European borders, enhancing the effectiveness of all projects and results.

The EUCIC Certification Working Group is at the heart of education, playing a crucial role in supporting the Education Board which oversees the selection and coordination of prestigious EUCIC certification examination committee members. Our dedicated role encompasses a range of activities from carefully designating examination committee members and crafting the final questionnaire, to administering secondary examinations for those needing additional support, and maintaining the consistency of questions for the final exam.
