ESCMID Panorama

A Modern Approach to the Management of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, ESCMID Postgraduate Education Course

7 - 8 September 2007, Saint Petersburg, Russia

Organizers

This course is jointly organized by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), the Interregional Association of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (IACMAC) and the Italian ESCMID-affiliated societies AMCLI, SIC, SIM, SIMIT, and SIV, and in cooperation with the Italian and Russian chapters of APUA.

Course Objectives

During the last 20 years, all European countries have seen changes to clinical services, health systems and other mechanisms through which sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are controlled.

These changes mostly followed the description of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and its causal agent, but increasing antimicrobial resistance complicates treating ‚old‘ STDs, too.

Insufficient health care centres, inadequate laboratory capabilities, and the unavailability of appropriate treatment often perpetuate the prevalence of STDs, and it is important to underline that underservicing is evident throughout our continent.

The purpose of this course is to sketch these developments in STD services and to provide an update of both the current epidemiology of STDs in Europe and their medical challenges.
